You switch the aircon on expecting cool, clean, crisp air – and instead you get hit with something that smells like fish, vinegar, wet socks, or worse. Why does my aircon smell?
If you’ve been looking for an answer elsewhere before landing here, you’ve probably noticed there’s no shortage of oddly specific descriptions for stinky air conditioners out there: ‘musty’, ‘damp’, ‘like pee’, ‘like egg’, ‘like gas’.
The reassuring part is that the answer is almost always down to just one of 3 real causes – no matter how many different ways people describe the smell itself. And knowing which one you’re dealing with makes it a lot easier to know how urgently to act.
The three real causes
No matter what word you’re using on to describe the whiff, the actual problem for the odour coming out of your vents probably fits neatly into one of exactly three buckets below:
1. Why does my aircon smell like vinegar?
It’s also possible you’re smelling the same basic thing but describing it in a different way:
- Why does my aircon smell like pee?
- Why does my aircon smell musty?
We think all three of those are a description of that musty, sour, vinegary, damp or frankly cat-pee-like smell that indicates the same underlying issue:
Mould, mildew or bacteria growing on the evaporator coil or sitting in a clogged condensate drain.
Moisture collects on the coil every time the unit cools the air, and if that moisture doesn’t drain away properly, it becomes exactly the environment mould needs to take hold. It’s all really just many different ways to describe the same family of bacterial smells.
THE FIX: A professional clean and service of the coil and drain line usually clears it up.
2. Why does my aircon smell like fish?
Yuck! But the answer to that one requires understanding a different problem entirely – and one that’s worth taking very seriously, as well.
You could be smelling overheating plastic insulation on electrical wiring – either inside the unit itself or elsewhere in the house – with the smell being drawn in through the return air and pushed out through your vents.
That’s very different from the mould-related smells above, since it’s about heat and melting plastic rather than moisture. Unlike the mould-related smells, this one isn’t something to leave and monitor.
THE FIX: Turn the unit off and get it checked before running it again.
3. Why does my aircon smell like gas?
This is the one that needs the most urgent response.
If your nose is picking up what seems like gas, or maybe rotten egg, can indicate an actual gas leak nearby – since that distinctive sulphur smell is deliberately added to natural gas and LPG specifically so leaks are noticeable.
If you get a whiff of this, don’t treat it like a standard maintenance issue:
- Turn the system off
- Open windows and doors
- Get everyone out
- Contact your gas provider or emergency services straight away.
It could also be a dead pest caught in the vents or ducts or something like that, but it’s still well worth having checked.
Yeah but why does it smell worse when I turn it on?
Another question we get all the time is: Why does my aircon smell when I turn it on but then it fades after a little while?
The likely answer is that moist, stagnant air can sit inside the unit and ductwork while it’s switched off, especially after the system hasn’t run for a while or at the start of a new season. The moment the fan kicks in, that trapped air gets pushed out all at once, which is why the smell often hits hardest in the first minute or two and settles down once fresh air’s been cycling through for a bit.
Unfortunately, it probably still points back to the same moisture and mould issue covered in #1 – just concentrated into that initial burst rather than being a separate problem in its own right.
Let’s get to the bottom of it
Working out the answer to why does my aircon smell bad usually isn’t complicated once you match the smell to one of the 3 categories we’ve talked about today.
To sum it up:
1. Mould-related smells are unpleasant but low-risk and generally just need a proper clean of the coil and drain.
2. Electrical smells need the unit switched off and inspected before it runs again.
3. Gas-related smells need to be treated as a serious emergency until proven otherwise – no exceptions.
Don’t ignore any of them – but knowing which bucket you’re in changes how urgently you should act. It will stop you either panicking over a simple mould issue or shrugging off something that really does need immediate attention.
